When chironomids slow down and the indicator stops bobbing, switch to a balanced leech. Tied on jig hooks with the bead offset from the eye, these flies hang horizontally under an indicator — moving naturally with the slightest chop, triggering eats when other patterns get refused.
Why Balanced Leeches Work
A balanced leech rides level under an indicator, so the slightest wave action gives it lifelike movement no weighted nymph can match. On Colorado stillwaters — Spinney, Antero, 11 Mile, Delaney Buttes — leeches account for some of the biggest fish of the year, especially when chironomid activity dies off mid-day or in cold pre-spawn windows. Pick a color that contrasts with bottom conditions and let the wind do the work.
